Fighters and Archery

Fighters

Since 2005, we have been running study groups and classes in historic European martial arts, that is, the fighting systems recorded in manuscripts and Fechtbucher (literally, "fight books") from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Anyone is welcome to come along and participate. All our classes are free, except for archery (which is by gold coin donation, to pay for replacement arrows).

We run two weekly practices:

* Saturday 1.30-4pm, Spreydon School sports field, corner of Curletts Rd and Lincoln Rd.
(weather permitting; cancellations will be advertised via the email list)

On Saturday we currently run a study group on the German Liechtenauer school. Our primary focus is the longsword (a sword normally wielded in two hands, but light enough for one), but the principles of Liechtenauer's Kunst des fechten ("arts of fighting") can be used with most other weaponry common in 15th century Germany, including dagger, arming sword, spear and unarmed combat.

* Wednesday 8-10pm, UCSA Ballroom, 90 Ilam Rd, Ilam (After arts and sciences).

On Wednesday nights, we focus on a different system in each university term.

Term 2 (April 30th - July 9th)
Andrew Memory will be teaching classes in Highland Broadsword, based heavily on Thomas Page's 1746 manual, "The Use of the Broad Sword as it is now in Use among the Highlanders".

For more information, please contact Andrew (theodesius@hotmail.com).

Term 3 (July 16th - September 3rd)
We will probably be studying Italian Rapier, based on Ridolfo Capoferro's "Great Representation of the Art and Use of Fencing"; or possibly German sword and buckler (a small round shield) from the Tower MS I.33, the earliest extant HEMA treatise. Stay tuned!

Archery practice
Alongside fighter's practice every Saturday is an archery practice, with both target and combat archery being practised. We shoot medieval style bows (longbows and recurves, no compounds), with wooden arrows with goosefeather fletching. The ranges we shoot at are typically 20 to 40 metres.

* Saturday 1.30-4pm, Spreydon School sports field, corner of Curletts Rd and Lincoln Rd.
